Mozambique’s Minister of Transport and Communications, Carlos Mesquita, announced this morning that his government was planning to invest US$11.6 billion in the building of roads, bridges, railway lines and airports in 2016, with the help of South African investors.

Mesquita pointed out that South Africa was one of Mozambique’s three major investors and played an important role in the Mozambican government’s five-year growth plan which would see the rehabilitation and modernisation of infrastructure over the next five years.

Of the total amount earmarked for this, US$2.2 billion will be spent on the maintenance and expansion of existing infrastructure.

Mesquita took time out from his honeymoon to address attendees at a Mozambique Transport, Infrastructure and Development seminar this morning (Wednesday, April 20) in Sandton, hosted by the South Africa-Mozambique Chamber of Commerce (Samozacc).

The seminar focused on public private partnerships particularly with regard to ports, roads and railways.

“The relationship between Mozambique and South Africa goes back many years and is becoming greater and greater,” said Mesquita during his keynote address.
