A service base to support the Rovuma liquefied natural gas (LNG) project and offshore operators across the region is planned in Mozambique, according to energy technology and oilfield services company SLB, formerly Schlumberger.
The facility would provide local training and employment opportunities and support regional supply chains, SLB said in an announcement.
OneSubsea, SLB’s joint venture with Aker Solutions and Subsea7, plans to establish the base as part of its support for the project. Its location and opening date have not been announced.
The joint venture has secured a contract from ExxonMobil Moçambique, on behalf of the Area 4 partners, to supply subsea production systems for Rovuma LNG’s first phase.
The work includes engineering, procurement, manufacturing and installation services for subsea trees, manifolds, umbilicals and associated control systems, according to SLB.
Preparations for the development have also generated equipment and logistics contracts. Approximately $1.1 billion (about R18.2bn) in pre-investment contracts had been awarded for critical equipment, including subsea systems from OneSubsea, ExxonMobil announced in August.
Ordering specialised equipment with long delivery lead times would help prepare the project for execution ahead of a final investment decision, the company said.
Shorebase and logistics services in Pemba will be provided under separate contracts announced by ExxonMobil on September 10. CFML Logistic will supply land and infrastructure services at the Pemba Bulk Terminal, while Alistair Group Mozambique will provide shorebase logistics support for the Area 4 drilling campaign and related offshore operations.
The activity follows the lifting of force majeure on Rovuma LNG, previously reported by Freight News, after work was suspended amid security concerns in northern Mozambique.
The development includes offshore gas production and an onshore LNG plant with a planned capacity of 18.6 million tonnes a year, according to ExxonMobil. The partners were progressing towards a final investment decision in 2026, the company said.
