South Africa is seeing "long-term rail projects getting real attention" from private sector invstors, according to Elvin Harris, president of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport South Africa (Ciltsa).

“However the need for rail is so big and rail infrastructure is so far behind that it requires a lot more investment and infrastructure,  and  the rail industry is having to play a lot of catch-up,” he said during an interview with FTW Online on the side lines of the 2016 AfricaRail Conference and Exhibition.

“South Africa is falling back in love with rail but investment needs to go into infrastructure that transports cargo off the port and onto rail and vice versa,” he said.

“If South Africa can get: road; rail and port connectivity to work, the economy will thrive and people will benefit,” said Paul Brooks, international president of Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT).
