Despite hard times hitting the entire global economy, some local businesses are still forging ahead with huge enthusiasm. One such example is Hellmann Perishable Logistics (HPL) which recently moved its Cape Town offices into new and larger premises at Airport Industria. The move means essential new warehousing space as well as three coolers at the airport itself, which brings huge benefits, says regional director Ralf Heske. “It is easy to do seafreight anywhere,” he says. “But to deal with air cargo we have to be on the premises. “Our customers can now deliver direct to our office, where perishables are put straight into cold storage before being shipped out. There is no double handling involved.” Heske has been with the company for ten years and has now moved his family to Cape Town. “We have repositioned ourselves in Cape Town and this “re-launch” means we are offering a complete supply chain and moving closer to our sister company which has offices in Durban, East London, Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth.” Discussing global trends in the future, Heske believes that the industry is in reality moving back to seafreight, but that space on ships is increasingly limited. “The dilemma is who gets the slots first? “By doing both dry goods and perishables, HPL is looked upon more favourably.” HPL Worldwide Logistics has 368 offices in over 140 countries.
