South Africa and Mozambique have failed to reach agreement on a proposed bilateral trade Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two countries, with Mozambique’s Minister of Transport and Communications, Carlos Mesquita, labelling it “one-sided”.

Mesquita refused to sign the MoU at the Mozambique Transport, Infrastructure and Development seminar held in Sandton on Wednesday.

He said the MoU favoured trade out of SA to Mozambique and was not sufficiently inclusive. Mozambique had taken the initiative to draft an amended agreement that would be more reciprocal, he added.

“We want to see more South African companies in Mozambique, but we also want to see a lot more Mozambican companies in South Africa.”
