The present and future faces of shipping in South Africa took time out in Cape Town last month to celebrate World Maritime Day (WMD) as Safmariners shared their experiences and insights with students at the Lawhill Maritime Centre in Simonstown. The United Nations (UN), via the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), created WMD to celebrate the international maritime industry’s contribution to the world economy, especially in shipping. As the world’s only really reliable, global, costeffective and energy-efficient mass transportation method, the maritime sector plays a pivotal role in the supply chain. The event’s date varies in different countries but it is mostly celebrated in the last week of September. This year the focus was on “sustainable development initiatives in the global maritime industry”. CAPTION Safmarine’s Luke Ramsey looks on as his colleague Stephen Gohl shares some career advice with students at the Lawhill Maritime Centre in Simonstown in celebration of World Maritime Day.
