CEO of the Cross-Border Road Transport Agency (CBRTA), Sipho Khumalo, says a “plethora of uncoordinated local and provincial law enforcement agencies” is inspecting trucks unnecessarily in South Africa.
To prove the point, the CBRTA monitored a truck from the Durban port to the Beitbridge border post. “The truck was stopped 27 times before it arrived, with the average time of the stops taking 45 minutes,” said Khumalo.
“Nine out of ten times trucks are stopped for the same reason, are inspected for the same reason, and are issued with the same fines.”
He said the issue had been raised at several fora within government.
He added that the Agency was also engaging with the Minister of Transport, Dipuo Peters, as well as with acting police commissioner, general Khomotso Phahlane, on the matter.
“Concrete proposals have been made towards the consolidation of policing,” he said.
