South African small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can apply for a free programme offering support with customs, logistics, trade finance and access to African markets.

The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) TradeRoots Africa programme will support businesses preparing to trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and regional trade arrangements.

South Africa is among 11 priority countries identified in the programme’s application documents. The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition has encouraged eligible businesses to apply.

Support covers six areas:

  1. Trade knowledge and market access
  2. Trade finance
  3. Logistics, customs and air transport
  4. Digital trade tools
  5. Mentorship
  6. Business development

According to the ICC, the programme will run from November 2026 to August 2027. Its first tier will provide foundational training for 1 000 African SMEs, covering export compliance, documentation and regional trade requirements.

The second tier will accommodate 200 SMEs for more advanced support, including regional or corridor boot camps, buyer connections and trade finance readiness workshops. The third tier will provide 50 SMEs with more tailored assistance on export plans, buyer engagement and transactions.

Applicants must be majority African-owned, registered and legally operating in an AfCFTA state party and have traded for at least two years. The eligibility criteria specify annual turnover above US$5 000 (approximately R82 200) and a product or service ready for export.

Businesses must also identify a target export market or corridor, have an active digital presence and commit an owner or senior manager to participate. Previous export experience is not required, according to the programme.

Participants will need to commit about two hours a week to online modules during the foundation phase from November 2026 to March 2027. Support between sessions will include practical checklists, recordings, WhatsApp communication and opportunities to ask questions during office hours.

Applications close on October 15.
